Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise encouraged her passion for artistic expression and creative thinking. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that art can be used to promote activism. DuVernay grew up with her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her how to make use of the arts as a way of expression. DuVernay was raised in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay received her high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began producing television news when she was just a young student. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage in the house of a member of jury. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed and deciding to go after the field of publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. Alongside PR, her agency also created a variety of social media and lifestyle networks, including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
